As I write this, I can feel the sweat rolling down my back. The humid summer air is breathing down on me like a mad man, sucking every bit of energy from me. I slept on a camp bed last night. Not the most comfortable thing in the world, but there is something so beautiful about camp that sweat and humidity and sleep deprivation are tossed to the wind in favor of smiles and true contentment.

I played a solo show at Camp Cumberland Pines in Altamont, TN last night. Then I crashed here at the camp. In a few minutes I’ll head for my next Camp Destination: Baker Mountain in Spencer, TN. We’re out in the middle of nowhere. Lucky for me, though, I know how to get to Baker Mountain; I accidentally drove there last night. Yes, I showed up at the wrong camp. By some act of a gracious God, I had arrived much earlier than necessary, so I was able to still make it back to Cumberland Pines in time for my show. I’m a moron in the truest sense of the word.

Betsy Ruhlig is the director for both of the camps. She’s a cool chick. These are service camps. Teenagers (and adult leaders) show up at the camp for a week and go out into the community to serve the less fortunate, taking with them the love of Jesus and a beautiful picture of what it means to be his child. Betsy, Sam, Charles, and the others here at the camp organize all of this and they work really hard to get it all done. It has been a pleasure to meet them all and to get to be a part of their lives for just this little bit.

I’m leaving now. On my way, I’ll be stopping at the only mom and pop dairy bar on planet earth for a heaping vanilla ice cream cone. See ya’ll soon…
